Solving Addition Problems Using Compensation

This is a lesson I taught earlier in the school year. It was something that I do not remember learning honestly. The topic is called compensation, and I taught my 2nd graders how to add using compensation. With compensation, I had to remind my students that if you add a certain number to one side of the equation, then you have to subtract the same number to the other side of the equation.  Here is an example of some guided practice problems we did in class: Guided Practice: Use Compensation to make numbers that are easier to add. Then solve. Show your work. 1. 17 + 9 = 26                                                           +3 -3 20 + 6= 26                                          ...

Solving Two-Step Problems Using Addition and Subtraction Post #2

For this lesson, I taught the students how to solve two step problems. I first played a video about the lesson that would help guide them into the lesson.  Later in the lesson I completed this problem solving page in class live with my students. Reflecting back on my lesson, my students really understood what was being taught. I like how in the Savvas Realize Curriculum, the students experience different ways a question can be asked. I also like the problem solving page because there is an Assessment Practice question that will help them prepare for the assessment at the end of the topic ahead of time. During this lesson it was important for me to emphasize that two step problems will have more than one equation to it.  Below is the homework from this lesson from one of my students. As you can see, my student chose to do mental math to figure out these equations. He is allowed to do this since the page allows any strategy to be used. He was able to successfully get all o...

Problem Solving Using Addition and Subtraction : May 14th,2021 Post 1

For this lesson, I taught students about using addition and subtraction to find the unknown number in an equation. Below is an example of part of what I taught  in class, from the Savvas Realize EnVision workbook, grade 2, Topic 7, lesson 1. I do a few problems from the book with the class, and I also show them a video about the lesson that Savvas Provides. I screen shotted some of the work I did below. Teaching remotely is not always easy, especially when teaching math. Reflecting on this lesson, I am grateful that my students were able to receive physical copies of the book, so that I can see them write out their work. There are many different strategies I have taught so far in the 2nd grade. Below, I am attaching a students work for the Independent Practice Pages from the workbook that I assigned from that specific lesson. The student used the break apart strategy with several of the problems and succeeded in getting the correct answers. The technique I used is showing the...
