Solving Two-Step Problems Using Addition and Subtraction Post #2
For this lesson, I taught the students how to solve two step problems. I first played a video about the lesson that would help guide them into the lesson.
Later in the lesson I completed this problem solving page in class live with my students.
Reflecting back on my lesson, my students really understood what was being taught. I like how in the Savvas Realize Curriculum, the students experience different ways a question can be asked. I also like the problem solving page because there is an Assessment Practice question that will help them prepare for the assessment at the end of the topic ahead of time. During this lesson it was important for me to emphasize that two step problems will have more than one equation to it.
Below is the homework from this lesson from one of my students.
As you can see, my student chose to do mental math to figure out these equations. He is allowed to do this since the page allows any strategy to be used. He was able to successfully get all of the correct answers. I used the EnVision Mathematics Grade 2 workbook, Topic 6, lesson 4 for this lesson.
Common Core State Standards For Mathematics: Standard for Mathematical Practice: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Hi Victoria, great job! I really like how you used different methods and mediums for teaching with the video and worksheet. I also really like how in your reflection you talk about how students are allowed to use different strategies to figure out a problem. This is so relevant to our class readings about higher level thinking in math classes!

ReplyDeleteI really like the multiply ways you showed how to do two step addition and subtraction problems. I also like how you showed your students work, it shows their mathematical thinking, which was refreshing.
