Problem Solving Using Addition and Subtraction : May 14th,2021 Post 1
For this lesson, I taught students about using addition and subtraction to find the unknown number in an equation. Below is an example of part of what I taught in class, from the Savvas Realize EnVision workbook, grade 2, Topic 7, lesson 1. I do a few problems from the book with the class, and I also show them a video about the lesson that Savvas Provides. I screen shotted some of the work I did below.
Teaching remotely is not always easy, especially when teaching math. Reflecting on this lesson, I am grateful that my students were able to receive physical copies of the book, so that I can see them write out their work. There are many different strategies I have taught so far in the 2nd grade. Below, I am attaching a students work for the Independent Practice Pages from the workbook that I assigned from that specific lesson. The student used the break apart strategy with several of the problems and succeeded in getting the correct answers.
The technique I used is showing the video of the lesson and then doing some guided practice in class, which helps the students learn more about the topic.
The standard that this lesson is based on NYS Next Generation Learning Standard Mathematics Learning Standard: NY-2.OA: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction: 1a. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions.
This is great work! It is so difficult to do online and it looks like you are doing a great job!
