Data and Graphs: Line Plots 2nd Grade Lesson Post # 6
For the next few posts, I want to talk about Data and different types of Graphs. Recently, I taught my students about line plots. For most of them, it was something that they have not seen before. To introduce the topic, I played my students' the video that explains what a line plot is. While viewing this video, it was important for my students to understand that line plots are often used to collect data.
The video also explains how to read a data table, as well as how to plot data on a line plot.
As I reflect back on this lesson, I feel accomplished. I taught my students how to use data as well as how to use a line plot. The lesson went well and my students thoroughly understood what they needed to do.
I used the EnVision Mathematics Grade 2 workbook, Topic 15 lesson 1 for this lesson.
New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards: NY-2.MD.1: Measure the length of an object to the nearest whole by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
NY-2.MD.9: Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Present the measurement data in a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number unit.

Hey Victoria! I love the video and the lesson as a whole. Having your students find school objects that they own and incorporate that into the lesson is such a great way to both engage them and make it hands on. I'm sure they got a lot out of that!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great lesson. I think the part that stands out to me the most is the Solve and Share problem. It sounds like a great way to physically engage students while also increasing their interest.
