Working with Coins!- 2nd Grade Lesson Post #4
In this math topic, I taught my second graders about coins, including how to add them; and what each coin represents (how many cents). I made sure to first play the visual learning video that Savvas Realize provides in regards to introducing the lesson. It helps my young learners focus on what they are going to be learning. What I liked about this video is that it showed how much each coin represented, and it also asks questions for the students to answer, as shown below.
After playing the video, I did some problems with the class in regards to adding coins, as shown below.
Below is an example of one of my students' homework after the lesson.
As you see, he was able to successfully complete all of these coins questions and he even used a number line to help him solve the first problem.
Reflecting back on this lesson, I believe that it went well. My students were all able to comprehend the meaning of each coin and how to add the coins together.

New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards: NY-2.MD.8a: Count a mixed collection of coins whose sum is less than or equal to one dollar.
NY-2.MD.8b: Solve real world and mathematical problems within one dollar involving quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using the 𝇍 (cent) symbol appropriately. e.g., If you have 2 quarters, 2 dimes, and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?
