 I was able to teach my students about time earlier in the school year. I believe that teaching students at a young age about time is extremely important. I found a website called ixl.com that has excellent activities and resources for 2nd grade in regard to time. I wish that I would have known about this website sooner. In the above activity, students would first read the time that is shown on the analog clock. Then, the question asks what time the analog clock shows, and how would it look like on a digital clock. I really like how if you click on the blue speaker, the directions as well as the question is read out loud to the student. I also like how this website gives the students a refresher of how to read time on a analog clock if they really get stuck. Reflecting back on this resource and lesson, I think it would be a useful website to help students continue to learn about time. By the 2nd grade students should already be familiar with time.   I will be continuing to talk about Graphs and Data in this post. This week, I will be talking about a lesson I did with my 2nd graders on picture graphs. My students enjoyed learning about these types of graphs the most. I first played the visual learning video in order to introduce the topic to my class, both verbally and visually. I like how the speaker in the video explained how using pictures instead of numbers or tally's can still represent those numbers or tally marks. Next, we worked on a problem together in class. This convince me problem asked the students to explain how can a tally chart and picture graph be similar to each other to represent the same data. The students first counted the amount of students who liked each type of ball games on both charts. They noticed that both charts shows the same amount, except one is by using the picture key, and the other is by using tally marks.  This week, my post is a continuation of Data, but it is going to be talking about Bar Graphs. Now that my students are able to recognize and read data, they are also able to learn about different types of graphs. For this lesson, I first played the Visual Learning Video. This video helped my students understand what a bar graph is; as well as what it looks like and how to read a bar graph.  I like how in the visual learning videos there continues to be questions throughout the video. This helped to keep the students engaged as well as making sure they were comprehending what was being taught in the video. For the Solve and Share problem that my students and I worked on together,  I had them figure out how many numbers of birthdays are in the bar graph. My class had to read the bar graph one by one in order to find the answers. Reflecting on this lesson, I think that it went well. For the next few posts, I want to talk about Data and different types of Graphs. Recently, I taught my students about line plots. For most of them, it was something that they have not seen before. To introduce the topic, I played my students' the video that explains what a line plot is. While viewing this video, it was important for my students to understand that line plots are often used to collect data.  The video also explains how to read a data table, as well as how to plot data on a line plot. For some practice, as a class we worked on a Solve and Share Problem. For this problem, I had the students find different school items that they own, and I had them measure it using a ruler in inches. Once I collected their data, we filled in the data table and the line plot as a class. As I reflect back on this lesson, I feel accomplished.  For this lesson, I taught my students how to solve problems with many different dollar bills, rather than coins.  I noticed that my students enjoyed working with dollar bills more than working with only coins. For some reason, in the workbooks, both physical and digital, the visual learning video is not mentioned as the first thing to be presented. However, I think it is vital to show the visual learning video to the 2nd grade students first so that they can get an idea of what the lesson and topic will be about.  I definitely liked that the video started off by explaining how many coins a dollar bill is worth. I also liked how in this video, the students were able to see many physical images of what different bills look like.  I did some guided practice problems with my class.  The students did well with counting how much money was in each problem.  In this math topic, I taught my second graders about coins, including how to add them; and what each coin represents (how many cents). I made sure to first play the visual learning video that Savvas Realize provides in regards to introducing the lesson. It helps my young learners focus on what they are going to be learning. What I liked about this video is that it showed how much each coin represented, and it also asks questions for the students to answer, as shown below. After playing the video, I did some problems with the class in regards to adding coins, as shown below. Below is an example of one of my students' homework after the lesson. As you see, he was able to successfully complete all of these coins questions and he even used a number line to help him solve the first problem.
